Officer assaulted, weapons seized during traffic stop in Strathroy

A Strathroy man is facing 24 charges after a police officer was assaulted and guns and drugs were confiscated during a traffic stop early Tuesday.

According to Strathroy-Caradoc Police, a suspicious vehicle was observed in the north end of the town just before 3:00 a.m.

When officers attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver evaded police, investigators said. The vehicle was located a short distance away and when officers approached, there was a confrontation with the suspect.

One officer was assaulted with a weapon, police said.

A 28-year-old man was arrested and taken into custody.

During their investigation police said they found a loaded pistol and other weapons in the vehicle, as well as a quantity of drugs.

The charges against the accused include:

  • assaulting a peace officer with a weapon
  • resisting arrest
  • flight from a police officer
  • possession of a firearm contrary to a prohibition order
  • carrying a concealed weapon
  • possession of a dangerous weapon
  • Five counts of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking
  • Three counts of failing to comply with a release order

The accused is being held in custody and is to appear in a court a later date.
