One man has died following an explosion at an RV storage yard in the southeast community of Legacy on Thursday afternoon.
“It was a propane explosion in the RV parked in the facility,” said Scott McCann, acting inspector with Calgary police. “At this time, it appears to be an accident.”
The explosion took place around 4 p.m. at the Pine Creek RV Storage, McCann said.
Upon arrival, fire crews found a large pile of debris and one man near the scene, who was pronounced deceased by EMS.
“They’re going to hold the scene in the lot so the arson investigators can do a full process of it, but they don’t see it lasting more than a few hours,” he added.
Six other trailers and campers were damaged as a result of the explosion, according to a release. A passing car may have also been hit by debris.
‘The floor started shaking’
Amir Mohammed — who lives in a nearby condo — said he was having a video call with family when he heard a big bang.
“The floor started shaking,” Mohammed said. “My wife was sitting in the next room and said that it was an earthquake.”
Tara Blonde had just finished work around 4 p.m. and was about to take a nap when she also heard the loud bang.
“There was construction right next door, and I thought a crane fell,” Blonde said. “Our whole condo kind of shook.”
The deceased has not been identified.
