Organizers of the 8th annual Bay and Algoma Buskers Festival, scheduled for July 25 and 26 in Thunder Bay, announced Thursday they have decided to cancel this year’s event.
The 2020 committee met several times in April to look at developing strategies for a successful festival in the midst of COVID-19, the Bay and Algoma Business Association stated in a written release.
“But considering current events,” they did not believe they could go ahead with the festival, which takes place every year in Thunder Bay’s downtown north core.
“With health and safety as a top priority, we don’t feel that it would be safe to run the festival nor do we think that large public gatherings will be allowed by July,” the committee said.
They also noted that in addition to public safety, they did not feel it would be financially responsible to run the festival this year.
“There are multiple roadblocks that have compromised our budget already with little breathing room,” they said.
Organizers thanked the volunteers, performers and vendors who contribute to the event each year, and said they do plan to present the festival in the future.
“It is definitely disappointing to have to make this decision but we plan to have a successful Buskers Festival in 2021. See you then and stay safe!”
