One person is dead after a heavily damaged vehicle was found near the bottom of the Niagara Gorge.
Emergency crews were called to the Niagara River Parkway near the Floral Clock in Niagara-on-the-Lake around 11:50 a.m. Saturday following reports a vehicle had gone into the gorge.
Firefighters and members of the Niagara Parks Police high angle river team arrived on scene and, after rappelling into the gorge, located the vehicle near the bottom with a deceased person inside.
Niagara police say they haven’t identified the victim.
They note the vehicle’s location makes it difficult to access it or the person inside.
“Due the location, officials from Ontario Power Generation are also working with emergency services personnel,” states a media release.
Detective continue to investigate, along with the Niagara police collision reconstruction unit and forensic services.
The parkway is still open to traffic.
Police are asking anyone who witnessed the incident to contact them.
